Cool. All we need are some more participants now. Sadly one of our keen participants has had to drop out for now. However, there are at least two others who have expressed an interest and if one or two previous participants join in too, that would give us plenty.

I’m not sure if my instructions for making a video were particularly clear or everyone is just amazing at making videos, but every one so far has been spot on.

All we need now is one more video (preferably 3!) and I can kick off the whole Vote-Off event. There are at least two more people who voiced an intent to take part, so this should be starting very soon.

If anyone is thinking about making a video for this and has any questions, please let me know. I’m happy to clarify anything and answer any questions.

With hindsight, I should have suggested that anyone who wanted their face obscured should wear a mask. Obscuring a face in a photo takes seconds. Doing it in a video takes a LOT more work 🙁

Two quick questions:

1. Bearing in mind the one-winner nature of this vote-off, is everyone okay with the idea of videos NOT published at the end of this event (ie everyone except the winner) being automatically entered into Vote-Off #7?
2. Do you have any issue with Vote-Off #6 opening for voting on Saturday evening? That would put the end of the event at the same time the following Saturday.

I’m not sure myself, but keeping votes (or at least say 50%) seems fairer.

It seems I just lost my Ko-Fi account, so I’ll have to put everything on hold until I can replace it. It happened sometime today and they didn’t bother to notify me. Now it’s almost midnight and I’ve got a busy day tomorrow. It might be Sunday before I get this sorted out. Sorry about the delay.

I’ve been looking at payment processors, especially those that I can set up in days rather than weeks and my options aren’t great. The vast majority would have an immediate problem with our community’s topic, some look seriously dodgy and some seem to have a longwinded vetting process that I’m not confident about passing.

A few years ago, I set up a PayPal account for this community site (That’s what Ko-Fi.com was using for transactions). PayPal’s rules are nebulous and, as far as I can tell, we don’t breach them at all. However, the vagueness worries me so I would recommend NOT entering anything at all in the “What is this payment for?” box.

Also, to minimise the number of transactions, I’ll request that everyone tries to buy votes in one or two larger transactions rather than many small transactions.

If this is okay for everyone, I’ll update the voting instructions etc. later tonight.

Transactions are instantaneous, so those that have already happened are fine. It’s just there won’t be any more Ko-Fis in future.

As long as we don’t mention the site, or the Vote-off and try to reduce the number of transactions where possible, I think it will be fine.

I’ve just updated the “How To Vote” page. I’ve gone away from the £3 increments (which were only there because of Ko-Fi’s payment structure, and that’s no longer relevant) and I’ve made bigger purchases better value.

I’m still waiting for 2-3 more videos but I’m also keen to get this started ASAP. It’s taken ages already. Is everyone okay if I get things started tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9pm?

You can buy votes now and anyone who gets their video to me by midday can still take part.

It’s only the first day and voting has already begun. It’s far too early to predict who’s going to win but I’m encouraging everyone to buy some votes, especially the participants who haven’t yet!

One more thing, I’m not going to accept a draw at the end of this Vote-Off. First of all, it makes more work for me, but also it leaves fewer videos to be carried forward into Vote-Off #7. One less video could mean waiting a couple of weeks longer before the event begins.

I’ve been thinking through the logistics and I’ve just realised a minor issue. I haven’t edited and rendered all the videos, I was planning to do just the one that one. But finishing at 9pm, means I’ll have some admin stuff to do for 15-20 minutes after 9m (updating pages, results etc.) and I can’t realistically get the video uploaded immediately. I fear that might have to be tomorrow…
